AI porn will be successful for the same reason AI music will be; because we've already become addicted to mediocre substitutes.
If you're not on X (twitter, whatever) you may not be familiar with these new AI Influencers. Basically they're porn bots. The photos are created with AI. They have tens, hundreds of thousands of followers. They clearly state in their bios that they are not real - that they're "AI Influencers," and yet the comments are full of thousands of men posting how hot they are, asking for more photos, offering to pay for more, interacting with them like they're real. It's a sad state of affairs for humanity, yes.
AI porn will be successful, at least for a time, for the same reason AI music and AI writing will be; because it’s not that different from what people have already become trained on. As a culture we’ve become addicted to mediocre substitutes for the real thing. The comments you see on these AI e-thot accounts are not at all different from the ones you see on the accounts of actual OnlyFans women on Twitter (X, whatever). The men offering to pay the AI porn-bots money are not that different than the men paying actual women for sexualized photos and videos. It’s a servitude relationship built on addiction. One party provides a replacement for true intimacy - a fantasy, while the porn-addicted party provides money.
I started thinking about AI music and AI writing. There are already AI songs (they use the voices and music of real human artists to generate new ripoffs) that have soared in popularity, challenging the music industry to come up with a solution that addresses credit and compensation. AI apps are already writing film and TV synopses that are not all that different from the woke uninspired crap currently coming out of Hollywood writer's rooms. When you sacrifice meritocracy and talent for identity politics, ideology, and algorithm-chasing, you train people to become accustomed to the mediocre, the repetitive and the derivative.
How is AI music all that different from the uninspired, repetitive, 'filthy for the sake of being filthy,' algorithm-created drivel that passes for most popular music today? Many pop stars don’t write their own songs, can’t sing without auto-tune, and haven’t mastered any instruments. I have on more than one occasion heard the curated playlists of young people’s favorite songs, and listened as they all sing along for about 30 seconds before jumping to the next only slightly indistinguishable song, like they are scrolling through Tik Tok. AI music will succeed because we’ve reached a point in culture where an entire generation has become accustomed to fake, manufactured music, devoid of the spark of human joy. They can't even sit through an entire song, when it's their favorite song, before scrolling on to the next. A generation raised on these devices we find so addicting, with no knowledge of what came before, don't know the beauty of hearing imperfections in a live full-band take of Ritchie Valens recording La Bamba. They’ve been weaned on mass-produced inferior garbage and what does it matter all that much if the garbage is created by a committee, an algorithm & auto-tune or by AI? They have no connection to music, just to cults of personality and filth.
What is the real difference between Hollywood's current ideologically-driven writers' room composition and AI "writers" prompted to created woke drivel? I've heard story after story of writer's assistants who are passed over for promotion because they're straight, white men and it would "look better" to bring in someone from the outside who checks off other identity boxes. When storylines and writer's rooms are being chosen based not on human talent, but on pushing an ideological agenda, it's not so hard to imagine writers becoming so predictable, boring and moralizing that they can be replaced with AI.
What is the real difference between men who spend their time and money on fake AI porn-bot accounts and men who spend their time and money on actual e-thot OnlyFans women? One party provides a replacement for true intimacy - a fabricated fantasy, while the porn-addicted party provides money. Does it matter all that much to the porn-addicted man if he knows the woman is not real? That she’s AI generated? How real is the human OnlyFans woman to him? Culture has weaned generations now on digital porn on demand, sabotaging people’s ability to establish true intimacy and selling us counterfeit parasocial relationships with those who sell sex. Does it matter if the Twitter account selling their body and their sex is AI or human to the junkie? I doubt very much that it does.
I think we're headed into a great unknown of human replacement with AI in the creative and online "personal" spaces. I do. But here's the silver lining: people crave authenticity. They do. There will be a growing number of people in future generations who crave the real thing; who crave music and writing with originality and the human spark of joy, who crave the unpredictable moments that open the door to human genius. And there will be a growing number of people who crave real intimacy, real human connection - not just sex, but the emotional and spiritual intimacy that can only grow in the vulnerability required in a meaningful life commitment to another person.
How many of the men consumming AI porn are real and how many are bots prompted up to normalize this. I don't think we are past the event horizon of widescale AI porn consumption, yet. There still something about real people providing these services even if everything else about it is fake. But you are probably right, and not just with porn. Ultimatly whats the diffence betweeen real people creating anything only to win favor by the algorithm and taking that last step to simply automate the creators themselves.
The internet is a hall of mirrors and the only way to navigate it is through authenticity
Great piece Keri. A good take on this new all consuming culture tool as well.🙂👌
