On Wednesday I had a myomectomy - a surgery that is recommended for the removal of uterine fibroids, in cases with extreme symptoms. Uterine fibroids are muscular tumors that grow in the uterus and uterine wall - they are almost always non-cancerous. Most fibroids develop between the ages of 30 - 50 and I have read that most women will have fibroids by their late 40s, but most women will never need treatment for them. It turns out that black women are somewhat more susceptible to fibroids, so now if I ever go on the comedy show Kill Tony, I’ll have an answer to his question, “What’s the blackest thing about you?” “I have uterine fibroids.” But only the black women will laugh, which in Tony’s audience means maybe one person.
I have read more about fibroids in the past year than I care to have done. I am glad they are gone.
