I think one of the biggest things the average person can do, if they struggle with the ego versus the soul, or the flesh versus the spirit, or the dark versus the light, or evil versus good in any decision (no matter how “small”) is to look at the people who have given themselves over to darkness, to the flesh, to the ego, to evil.
Look at these soulless monsters, worshiping the utterly empty, the vapid and the commonplace things: the self, the ego, status, the body, substances, meaningless transactional sex, identity, power over others, money.
Look at them, and at what they become (or have always been?): lowly liars, hypocrites, adulterers, cowards, hedonists always chasing the next high and never quite getting there. Look at these base and depraved people, without a shred of truth, compassion or empathy in them for good or for their fellow man. And understand that they got there step by step. And you don’t want to follow those steps.
Whenever I see a monster in the news, I am filled with disgust. Not just at what they did, but at what they now ARE. And I want to sing Hallelujahs, like a slave freed from captivity, and thank God for his saving grace that changes your life COMPLETELY! Because there for the grace of God go I!
A sincere belief in the Alpha and Omega changes everything; you still sin (we all do) but God won’t let you live in sin without being your conscience about it. He will try to discipline you. He will try to steer you back on the path. He will give you opportunities. How you govern yourself changes. And it’s only through the spirit; through the salvation of Jesus.
If you are a believer, and your faith is tested, even in a “small” thing (you might try to rationalize) hold fast, my brothers and sisters. Because you ALREADY know where that wide path leads. You used to be on it yourself! And there are living examples all around us of those who don’t get off it; the walking dead.
Like this Dr. Jay Varma. Let Dr. Jay Varma be your walking dead reminder today. Let your disgust be righteous and be used to keep you forever GRATEFUL for your salvation. If you delight this much in freedom, you will not pine for returning to slavery by any degree, even “small” degrees.
“And such were some of you. But ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:11
“For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.” 1 Peter 4:3-4
Well said. The other day i took my teen daughter to a crunchy health food store. After a while, she said “everybody in here is liberal.” I said “probably but why do you say that”.
She replied, “Because they have a certain look… they look angry and unhappy.” I laughed and said, “oh honey, that used to be me. And they are.”
You really test me with essays like this, Keri. I find I want to believe God does and doesn’t exist at the same time. Specifically, I want to believe he tries to discipline me and steer me back to the path, but I don’t want believing in him to be the price. Sounds completely illogical when I state it plainly, but it’s ironclad in me nonetheless.
