I think a lot of us have been thinking about this. My one-word theory is "ambition." Some people have this quality at the expense of all others. As for how this happens, there are several possible answers, all of which are disturbing.
Same train of thought as you. Do you think ambition can be broken down into a positive kind and a negative kind of ambition? If so, then I think the system has changed, where it selects for the negative kind.
Here's an interesting tidbit from Tucker Carlson about what might be going on. I've been coming across a lot of things like this recently, and I'm willing to entertain them, given we live in a world where the "authorities" lie to us constantly.
I told everyone I know the John Adams miniseries is great, couldn't convince anyone to watch it.
Equally good is the AMC series Turn. I think a lot of people didn't see it just because of the bad title. Brilliantly written and acted and even (mostly) historically accurate - I kept checking whether the things depicted really happened and learned a great deal I never knew.

It IS great! We are loving it! I haven't heard of Turn. Will add it to our list; thank you!
