If you look deeply, it's the theme of the story Lord of the Rings too... Frodo has the quiet courage to resist the lure of power. And in his quiet sacrifice, the whole world in the end is magically purified.
This is profound. Perhaps humility is the penultimate gift of the Holy Spirit, after faith---because humility is the opposite of the original sin, pride. Only by experiencing the pain of humility and the letting go of all pretensions can we, as you put it, root out the Cain within ourselves.
